The RAF Sheepskin Bomber Jacket

Back in the early 1930s, a talented parachute pioneer came up with a design that would become one of the most iconic pieces in British aviation history: the RAF sheepskin bomber jacket. This was the only RAF flying jacket made from real animal skin. It was specially designed to keep pilots warm while flying at freezing high altitudes during WW2.

Our reproduction of the vintage WW2 pilot jacket remains faithful to the early Battle of Britain model. This sheepskin jacket is carefully cut and graded from an original WW2 RAF jacket in our archive. Early versions of this jacket, like the one we offer, were made with single-piece body and sleeve panels. As the war intensified, and demand for jackets increased, they switched to a design that used smaller pieces to make production more efficient, leading to more seams.

This RAF sheepskin jacket is crafted from thick, durable sheepskin with a 20 mm fleece lining, keeping the quality as high as the original WW2 jacket. It features a tall collar for added warmth, a sturdy front zip, zippered sleeves, and a functional half-belt at the waist, just like the RAF flying jackets used in WWII. The original zipper used in the WW2 RAF jackets were by the brand “Lightning”. We have reproduced the design of this zipper to make the jacket even more authentic.

Today, the RAF aviator jacket is still one of the most sought-after recreations of military style sheepskin bomber jackets. Worn by brave RAF pilots during WWII, the RAF sheepskin bomber jacket is now a coveted piece for those who value both fashion and history.

On April 22, 1940, members of a British RAF Handley Page “Hampden” bombing squadron give a thumbs-up as they return from attacking German warships off Bergen, Norway.
