THE D1 SHEEPSKIN JACKET
The U.S. Army D-1 mechanic jacket, introduced in the mid-1930s, was specifically crafted for ground crews enduring challenging weather conditions. Designed for the ground crew on aircraft in the midst of winter on windswept airfields, this shearling jacket provided essential warmth. Constructed from a lighter weight sheepskin with 8mm-depth wool, the D-1 jacket differs notably from the B3 jacket, offering a sleeker and less bulky silhouette. You’ll notice a weight difference when comparing it to the B3 jacket. However, the USAAF D1 jacket will still provide insulation and protect you from the cold weather. In line with original examples, all external seams are covered with dark brown horsehide, and the pockets are produced from white cotton twill, accessible through Talon zippers.
Our pattern is based on an authentic USAAF D-1 jacket (MFG. SAAD), with adjustments made to accurately reflect the specifications of the classic D-1 flight jacket in its most typical form.
